Today was suppose to be the review of the first draft of the report, however it was being postpone to Thursday. Spent quite a lot of time editing on my report which was not really well done when I was going through it myself yesterday. Learnt more on how to do the report like the analysis.

I have truly learnt a lot about search facilities, databases and more , through doing the portfolio. The stating of the features/ functions, analysis of the search facilities and understand the strengths and weakness of them makes me understand the search facilities even more. If I had never attend this module, I would probably never know there are such search engines and methods to do research.

Today we were introduced to invisible webs. It was rather confusing for me, probably I digest information slow. Invisible webs are basically databases. Usually they cannot be access through search engines. For example, the school's "Spark" requires User ID and password in order to access. Learnt quite a bit, however still need to read up more about. Only manage to absorb a few information for now.

The search facilities brings about different benefits. I chosen my search facilities as Google Search Engine, Mamma Meta Search and Yahoo Directory. There are different effectiveness for each of the search facilities. For these, each search facilities have different number of searh results, some are as little as less than 100. Google search results has the highest it went through millions of search. All of them searches relevant result to my topic. Some are much more focus into the topic itself and provided much more information that I am looking for.

Site feed in blogs are good to a certain extend whereby it allows users to keep track others sites. However, upon clicking the site feed link, it will come to a "default" page. It does not show the original blog. I might not use site feeds in future for personal blog since there is a link section that I have already added my friends blog links. I can simply just click on the links to go to their blog to see.

Went through lecture 3 and practical 3 worksheets, learnt quite a few new things. To me is like some hidden research method or so because it does not commonly seen people using such a method to do their research. The method is something like (impact OR effect*) AND (child* or kid*) ...... just putting this important keywords will ended up having the results that we might be looking for. Amazingly, it does helps a lot. It narrows down to the website information that you are looking for.

Worksheets are slowly becoming more challenging and the questions requires a lot of research too. Comparisons between two search engines as well. Even though the search engines (Google and Scholar google) is under the same GOOGLE, it works differently. Basically both google and scholar google categorise their resources, however the way each of them does the search differently.

Next, the participation in discussion forum. I started a post in about.com whereby surprisingly they do have a section just for Alcoholism topics. You can start anything related to that from general to problems to helps. It was a little nervous while starting a new post in the forum because you wouldn't know what the people will reply. They might probably just screw up your whole post or just debate a lot about your topic. Personally, I felt that replying in the forums should be careful with our sentences because people might get the wrong idea and starts to argue in the forums. Somehow that's what happened to my first attempt in the forum. There was a slight arguement.

The replies the people gives, some are rather useful for my research as much as they know what you actually want to know about. Some replies might go a little too in depth till it is a little far off from the answer you actually wanted. People actually share their real life experiences which give you an idea of how it is like. Indeed I felt so much anxious while talking to them. People who you do not know, actually gives you great suggestions and they guide you through if your questions or answers are somewhat wrong. It is great to communicate through forum for some reasons.

That are reasons to do citation and bibliography. One of them is that it will helps you greatly in your work. With the list of citation and bibliography, any time you can refer to the links there if you need them in future. The other reason is that to credit the resources which you use it help out in the research. Furthermore, without proper citation might lead to plagiarism which is an serious offend.

DAY.two

Day two is not much of a hectic day. All we did was to complete the practical worksheet 1 & 2. I had a slight change in my topic as well. The final topic I had was "Impact of alcoholism on family", quite a big range here. Basically can talk about the influences, consequences and side effects about it.

Based on the previous entry about "What if I am given $500 to spend on online shopping, what will I spend on?"
It was a pretty nice activity, for a moment I actually forgotten what I had always wanted to buy. After thinking through, I decided to give something to my friend and a little small thing for myself IF POSSIBLE.

Upon looking the various online shopping websites(Ebay, amazon, etc), I realised that almost all the items I looked for somehow will give me an impression of "Is this reliable?" or "Is this price reasonable". Some details stated on the particular item is not sufficient and makes me unsure about whether if I should purchase it or not. Of course, they do state that if needed further details do contact the seller. However, to me this will take up some time before you can actually decide to purchase it or not.

Hmmm.. that's it for day two..

I had plan for quite a while and wanted to get my friend a cool birthday present.. haha how ridiculous we have not been exchanging presents for like ... nearly 4 -5 years until this year where we planned to exchange (sort of) haha.. Anyway is not the presents that makes the friendship wonderful.

Yesterday was the start of this EIR, to my surprise, more than 10 of my class friends are in the same CDS as me. Gosh.. that's so cool. Next, was my lecturer, Ms Faridah. She looks fine and okay to me and of course I felt comfortable attending the very first lesson.

I did not have a very clear understanding of EIR on the very first day, all I know was is about internet research (search engines, etc). We started off with having some online ice-breaking which makes everyone to do some research. What I actually found out during the search was that the user should type in appropriate words in order to get what they wanted. A different in the word used might cause a difference in the result that the user is looking for. However, still internet is amazing where it will answer to almost all the question you have.

Follow up next was the use of the MSN messenger, it is definitely a world wide application used by almost everyone. It is fast to communicate and interact with people through the internet.

Finally the first day ends with a pile of notes and practical papers that are supposed to be completed in the next few lessons. Gosh.. it's freaking thick.. And I realised, blogging really took me very long to complete one post only.. gosh ...

Amy here from Interactive Media Design (IMD). Amazingly I have tonnes of nickname ranging from army to ant to puttputt and furthermore. Thanks to those people who always typo error my name. Currently I am 18, I remembered some people saying me that I does not look like one even though I am studying in year3 now. Hmmmm.. somehow it makes me feels young haha..

What I like? Definitely sports.. Yea sports.. especially badminton, cycling and more.. I missed those secondary school days where there were weekly PE and CCA. Now in poly, I do not even have much time to sleep more or less to spare some time for sports. Yea when project week is near to the end, sleepless nights begin it history once again.

Hmmm.. I think that's all for a introduction here..
